Bio:

Natasha “Courage” Bacchus is a Tkaronto-based Guyanese, Black Deaf queer multidisciplinary artist and former three-time Deaflympian sprinter. Her journey from elite athletics to art-making reflects her dedication to expanding the boundaries of expression—both mental and physical—through embodied storytelling, performance, and advocacy.

Courage began her artistic career in theatre with The Black Drum (2019), which sparked her ongoing exploration of performance and self-expression across diverse forms including acting, storytelling, physical theatre, visual vernacular, mime, and signed music. She has since performed in productions such as The Two Natashas, 21 Black Futures (CBC Gem), and season four of The Coroner (Netflix).

Her artistic development has been supported by fellowships and programs including the Wildseed Centre for Art & Activism Fellowship (2020–2022), Black Theatre Artist Mentorship, TMP Buzz Production, Why Not Theatre’s Generations Fellowship, Praxis of Possibility, and the 2023 Dora Leadership Accessibility Program.

Beyond performance, Courage works as an Art Accessibility Consultant, Deaf Theatre Interpreter, and activist, collaborating with numerous theatre and film productions to bridge gaps in Deaf, Black, and Indigenous representation within Canada’s arts landscape. She continues to advocate for equitable access and meaningful inclusion of Deaf artists in creative spaces, using her lived experience and artistry to challenge barriers and celebrate intersectional identities.
